What it checks

• Images with no alt text, or alt text that says nothing — "image", "photo"
• Data tables with no header row, the most common reason a screen reader turns a budget into meaningless numbers
• Tables used for layout instead of data
• Heading levels that skip, and long documents with no headings at all
• Links that say only "click here", or that show a raw URL a screen reader spells out
• Lists typed by hand with dashes instead of real list formatting
• Documents with no meaningful title

Why Accessibility Checker asks for permissions, and what it does with them

Accessibility Checker requests exactly two Google permissions, and no others:

• documents.currentonly — see and edit only the document you have open. This is required because the add-on has to read the actual structure of your document to check it: whether an image carries alt text, whether the first row of a table is a real header, what heading level each paragraph uses, and what text each link shows. It also uses this permission to move your cursor to the element that failed when you click "Take me there". It cannot open, list or read any other file in your Google Drive.
• script.container.ui — display a sidebar inside that document. This is required to show you the list of findings next to your document.

Your document never leaves Google. The checks run on Google's own servers inside your document's session. We do not receive, read, copy, store or transmit the content of your documents, and we do not use any Google user data to train machine learning models. The only thing stored is a count of how many checks you have run this month, so the free tier can be applied — and Google stores that for you, not us.

Honest about what it is

Automated checking cannot determine legal compliance — no tool can. A clean report does not mean your document is accessible, and conformance needs human judgement and testing with real assistive technology. This finds the common, mechanical failures fast, so your people spend their time on the ones that need a person.
